TOM Nyirenda’s influence on the Midlands’ hospitality industry is as clear as daylight – the amazing balance of a rustic outlook and futuristic interior of The Village Lodge screams of genius.
Through the three-star comfort lodge his influence is inevitably rubbing off on its competition to the greater good of the industry.
But it does not end there. There are more facilities under his belt in the Village Lodges’ family – The Suburban and Village Escape all of which he brought to life from his friend and proprietor Enos Size’s dreams and aspirations.
“We are more of friends than anything else,” he says as he took us on a tour of The Village whose ambience is just breath-taking.
He did not only influence the creation of upmarket facilities with his great team of co-workers who include Sibusiso Musengi but also ensured that there are trendy activities in some of the facilities like horse-riding, boat cruises and birding facilities at White Waters Escape.
His presence in the Midlands and at one time as chairperson of Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe’s local chapter has had a telling influence on the quality of service the sector has been enjoying since he settled into his current job almost ten years ago.
The veteran hotelier started his journey in the sector at Mount Soche in Malawi in 1978 and came into the country after independence in 1980 from where he went on to acquire 28 years of vital experience from African Sun hotels and further exposure from Rainbow Hotels before he decided to join his friend Size initially just to set up The Village back in 2006 on a consultancy basis and on a full-time basis to expand the project further around 2009.
His experience spans all the major tourist destinations across the country managing the sector’s finest hotels from Bulawayo, Mutare, Kariba, Victoria Falls and Hwange including The Kingdom Hotel.
Nyirenda who is the Village Lodges’ General Manager says their focus is on providing excellent service.
“Our focus is on providing excellent service to our customers. We make sure that their stay is comfortable which means even in our recruitment, we go for the best and most experienced and well-trained workers,” says Nyirenda.
